The walls of the courthouse in Rouen are riddled with blasts
and bulletmarks. The plastic bricks are stuck inside these holes
in order to repair them temporarily. The brightly colored Lego formations resemble bursts or splashes, strategically placed on the damaged, bullet-riddled facade of an old building.
The juxtaposition of the cheerful, toy-like Lego pieces against the scarred and weathered walls creates a striking visual contrast. It seems to suggest an attempt to metaphorically "repair" or heal the wounds inflicted by violence or conflict, using the playful and imaginative medium of Lego bricks.
The ephemeral nature of the installation adds to its poignancy. While the Lego splashes may temporarily cover or camouflage the bullet holes, they are not a permanent solution. This transient quality could symbolize the fragility of peace or the ongoing need for efforts to address and overcome violence in society.
Overall, this public art installation employs a creative and thought-provoking approach to draw attention to themes of violence, healing, and the power of imagination and play to transcend conflict. It invites viewers to reflect on these issues and consider the role of art in addressing social challenges.
